Saint-Gobain Performance Ceramics & Refractories offers a comprehensive portfolio of castable products ranging from regular cement content to LCC, ULCC and cement-free castables. Specialized castables such as self flowing or fast firing solutions are available, as well as topping mixes and coil cement for specific equipment zones.

Product characteristics are carefully developed in accordance with customers’ melting and service life needs. This level of adaptability is essential in equipment for transportation and metal transfer which requires excellent corrosion and thermal shock resistance.

Aluminum Application

NORCAST K 2000 AL -  A 65% alumina low cement castable with outstanding resistance to aluminum melting operations.  In laboratory testing this castable achieves a rating of 1 out of 5 on the Alcan immersion test.  1 being the best, and equating to no adherence or penetration of metal during the test.  This castable can be used for a wide-variety of applications, including but not limited to reverberatory melting furnaces, ladles, and lintels.

NORCAST S 760 – A low cement fused silica castable with outstanding resistance to metal and slag penetration.  As a fused silica product, this product offers superior resistance to thermal shock making it an ideal candidate for troughing systems, filter bowls, as well as pre-casting consumable items like pins, spouts and nozzles. 

NORCAST C 1300 F – A high silicon carbide castable designed for your toughest wear applications.  This product achieves superior results on ASTM C-704 testing, which makes this product ideal for high wear areas such as transfer trough sections, ladle floors, jambs, and material charging areas.

Are suitable mixes available for aluminum casting?

Specially developed mixes for aluminum melting, casting and transport. These recipes are optimized using high quality raw materials and specific anti-wetting systems to increase service life.

What is the best way to address issues with castable setting times in steel ladles? Should water content be adjusted?

The NORCAST® range has been designed to optimize setting time and mechanical resistance after drying, ensuring easier handling and reduced downtime. While it is not necessary to compensate with additional water, guidance on optimal added water ratios is available on product datasheets.
