Carbofrax MC 1158 Mortar

Silicon carbide based mortar

MC 1158 is a high-strength silicon carbide mortar developed for application on the sidewall and bottom of an aluminum reduction pot shell. The purpose of this cement is to fill the voids created by warpage and bending of the shell during normal service. After application by trowelling, the sidewall and bottom of the shell are once again quite level and flat, which provides the best surface for the maximum transfer of heat. This mortar promotes the maximum heat transfer between the silicon carbide or carbon sidewall or endwall block and the newly aligned shell. The water addition to this mix has been minimized to maximize the final bond strength and provide the highest thermal conductivity possible.

Benefits
  • Its excellent hot strength makes MC 1158 ideal for use as a deck plate castable in aluminium reduction cells
  • An excellent choice as a general purpose castable where heat dissipation is required
Properties
  • A high purity silicon carbide based castable developed for non-ferrous applications
  • Excellent strength with increased temperature
  • Very high coefficient of thermal conductivity
